Overview

The Department of Pediatrics at K.J.Somaiya Medical College & Hospital has established itself as one of the best Pediatric Tertiary Care Referral Centres in Mumbai providing excellent training to undergraduate and postgraduate students and high quality patient care to around 22,000 patients every year.

The specialty of Pediatrics is involved in providing a healing touch to every sick child from birth to 12 years of age. It is not only concerned with treating children suffering from various diseases but also includes prevention of diseases by immunization and assessment of nutritional status, growth and development of children.

Pediatric patients at K.J. Somaiya Hospital can be treated on OPD basis, IPD basis, in the casualty department or in the Intensive Care Units (for critically ill patients) depending on the patient. The Pediatric Department has two units headed by Dr. Varsha Phadke and Dr. Sujata Kanhere. The department is well equipped with a 60 bedded general ward, a 20 bedded state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a five bedded Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and a video EEG lab that are located on the 5th floor of hospital wing.

Pediatric OPD services are available every day from 9am to 4pm. The OPD days of Unit 1 headed by Dr. Varsha Phadke are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and the OPD days of Unit 2 headed by Dr. Sujata Kanhere are Monday, Wednesday and Friday. In addition to the general OPD, the Pediatric department also provides several Pediatric specialty OPD services to enable focused care to patients suffering from a variety of diseases.

Paediatric Ward

We have an aesthetically designed, spacious 60 bedded pediatric ward which is well-ventilated, well-illuminated, brightly painted with children’s favorite cartoon characters. The entire environment is completely child-friendly. The paediatric ward is equipped with central oxygen and suction, well-trained nursing staff and doctors 24/7 providing quality treatment in a sensitive, tender, loving manner to children suffering from various illnesses. We have a medical social worker who looks into other important aspects like funding for the BPL patients so that each child is given the best care regardless of their socio-economic background.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit:

We have a state of the art 20 bedded NICU. Our NICU is fully equipped with technologically advanced ventilators and monitors along with 24 hours nursing and medical care. We manage different neonatal conditions that include but are not limited to prematurity and low birth weight, respiratory distress syndrome, meconium aspiration syndrome, neonatal sepsis, birth asphyxia, jaundice, anemia, polycythemia and hemorrhage, neonatal seizures, apnea, necrotizing enterocolitis, fluid and electrolyte imbalances, metabolic disturbances, congenital heart disease, pulmonary hypertension, congenital anomalies etc. There is also a provision for in-house diagnostic modalities including laboratory facilities, neurosonography, ultrasonography, CT scan and electroencephalogram.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit:

The 5 bedded PICU is fully equipped with modern equipment needed for the treatment of critically ill patients. Our trained doctors ensure personalized care and manage children with acute or chronic infections, sepsis, pneumonias, respiratory failure, seizures, febrile encephalopathy, meningoencephalitis, cardiac failure, liver failure, kidney failure, diabetic ketoacidosis, metabolic emergencies, status epilepticus, status asthmaticus, shock, poisonings, severe anemia, hematological or oncological emergencies etc. and terminally ill children. Our pediatricians communicate with the parents regularly and involve them in the holistic treatment for facilitating the child’s quick recovery.

The hospital is well equipped to perform several diagnostic and therapeutic procedures under this speciality for neonates and children. The procedures such as lumbar puncture, pleural tapping, ascitic tapping, bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, liver biopsy and kidney biopsy ensure rapid diagnosis and early initiation of treatment for a better outcome.
