Overview

The speciality of Respiratory Medicine (also known as Pulmonary Medicine  treats patients suffering from diseases of the respiratory system (airways and lungs) such as asthma, bronchitis, tuberculosis, pneumonia, interstitial lung diseases, lung cancer, sleep related disorders and allergic diseases amongst many others. Patients having symptoms like cough, expectoration, hemoptysis (blood in sputum), chest pain and breathlessness are treated under this speciality.

This specialty service is offered at the K. J. Somaiya Hospital in the General as well as the Superspeciality units. Daily Outpatient (OPD), Inpatient (IPD), and 24/7 casualty services are also available. In addition to the routine daily OPD services, several speciality OPD Clinics like ‘Asthma OPD’ and ‘Interstitial Lung Disease OPD’ are conducted within the hospital premises to provide focused care to patients suffering from these diseases.

The hospital also has a designated DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment Short-course) Centre and DR-TB (Drug Resistant TB) Centre with a designated microbiology laboratory under the Revised National TB Control Programme, for diagnosis and treatment of TB patients free of cost.
